Position Title: Director, Student Learning Support Center

Reports To: Dean of SA

Job Purpose Summary:

The Director of the Student Learning Support Center (SLSC) is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational management, and continuous improvement of academic support services to enhance student learning and success. This position ensures the efficient delivery of tutoring, peer mentoring, and academic support programs, fostering a culture of academic excellence and student development.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

Strategic Leadership and Program Development:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive academic support programs, including tutoring, skill-building workshops, and peer mentoring initiatives, to improve student academic performance.
  • Evaluate existing services, recommend enhancements, and integrate best practices in student learning support.
  • Collaborate with faculty, department chairs, and academic leadership to align support services with institutional goals and curriculum requirements.
  • Utilize data-driven decision-making to assess student needs, measure program effectiveness, and implement continuous improvements.

Operational and Administrative Oversight:

  • Supervise and manage all aspects of the SLSC, including staffing, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and professional development of staff, peer tutors, and academic support coordinators.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and accreditation requirements related to academic support services.
  • Prepare and submit periodic reports on the Center’s performance, including annual and Board of Directors reports.

Student Support Services:

  • Manage the tutor-student matching process, ensuring an equitable distribution of academic support based on course demand and student needs.
  • Oversee the scheduling, monitoring, and assessment of tutoring sessions and workshops.
  • Implement initiatives to recognize and reward outstanding peer tutors and support staff.

Orientation and Academic Transition Programs:

  • Lead the planning and execution of orientation programs, including Program Orientation Day, Winter Orientation Day, and Freshman Convocation.
  • Develop and manage online and in-person orientation modules for new students and parents.
  • Facilitate communication with students and families through digital platforms, including WhatsApp groups and advisory boards.
  • Organize parent engagement initiatives, such as advisory board meetings and informational sessions.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Oversee the Center’s operational budget, ensuring financial sustainability and optimal resource utilization.

Crisis Management and Student Advocacy:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for students requiring academic intervention and learning accommodations.
  • Work collaboratively with Student Affairs and faculty to address academic challenges and retention risks.
  • Develop and implement emergency support strategies to assist students in crisis situations affecting their academic performance.

Other Duties:

  • Engage in professional development activities to stay updated on trends in student learning support.
  • Serve on institutional committees as assigned.
  • Perform other responsibilities as directed by the Chief Student Affairs officer

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Academic Support Services, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in academic support services, student success initiatives, or related areas in higher education.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including supervisory and budget management responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices in academic support, peer mentoring, and student retention strategies.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of English is upper intermediate (written & spoken), Russian and Kazakh – advanced.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in a relevant field.
  • Experience in data analytics and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems and academic support technologies.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including international students and students with learning differences.
